The importance of SEO and Networking in Blogging

SEO and networking are two important key factors when starting your blog. Today I’ll quickly cover why and how you can get a jump start on both.

SEO is Search Engine Optimization, which is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results. It’s important to use the correct keywords and tags in your blog posts so that potential readers will be able to locate your content. Doing a google search to find out the popular search terms for your niche can help with post titles and structure of your blog post. Don’t get too hung up on SEO initially. It’s definitely a learning curve to making sure everything is correct. There are numerous Facebook groups and Pinterest boards that can help you on your journey of finding out exactly how to streamline your SEO.

In the first post of this series, I mentioned having a website audit done by Edgar Mercado, who is a Web Developer from Mexico who specializes in marketing, SEO, and website design. I’ve gone to numerous workshops and conferences to make sure I’m up to date on everything SEO related, however, having a second set of eyes to go through your website never hurts. I told him my concerns on SEO and he conducted a very detailed analysis of how my site was performing, strong areas, and areas for improvement. His services are definitely worth using. Edgar can pin point the correct/incorrect usage of headers, tags, and picture tags as well. Finding out this information is beneficial because it helps your site become more searchable and also helps you reach readers who will be very interested in your content.

Networking is important because you want to build relationships with those who are in the blogging realm with you. This is important because sometimes you may need guidance or someone may need your expertise. You will be able to trade links, get feedback, build long-lasting friendships, collaborate, and so much more. Initially it’s hard finding other bloggers who may be just starting out like you, but I strongly suggest looking into the blogging groups on Facebook. The groups have daily engagements and people are generally helpful. Also, try searching for blogging communities on Instagram. I actually started a small group compiled of youtubers and bloggers in my area. We’re able to meet, brainstorm, detail any concerns, etc. Networking is also good because you’re able to get encouragement from like minded individuals who know the struggle of creating content and trying to promote a blog.

Pick a web host and domain

In the last blog post I mentioned the importance of just starting where you currently are and how along the way you can make adjustments. There are numerous hosting companies that you can build your blog on with little to no coding knowledge. I love using the WordPress platform because I’m able to customize any aspect of my site to my preference. However, there are other platforms that can be a little more user friendly such as Squarespace, Wix, and Weebly. All of these sites, including WordPress, have templates that you can edit such as the color scheme, fonts, pictures, navigation, etc. Before selecting which platform you want to go with, make sure you know what your budget is. Hosting and the domain name can add up quickly depending on who you decide to go with and also which packages they offer. I personally like GoDaddy for hosting because I can easily talk to someone on the phone no matter the time of day. However, some people prefer Bluehost, HostGator, SiteGround, and many more. Some other companies do offer phone support and others are strictly via email/chat. Just make note of what you would want from a company’s services.

Homework for next time….

  1. Search Google for keywords and terminology related to your niche and make a list (i.e. mommy blogger, toddler activities, etc.)
  2. Search for blogging groups and communities via Facebook and Instagram and join into the discussions or read previous discussions
  3. Decide on web host and domain

If there’s anything specific you would like me to include in this series, please let me know and I will add it to the list of topics!
